Bachelor of Arts in Economics

As a universal subject, economics at The American University in Cairo provides students with the job skills necessary to critically assess the market economy, using both regional and global perspectives. Students gain an appreciation of the interdependence of world economic systems, while critically examining the connection between theory and the main features of economic policy.

The Department of Economics offers both a major and minor in economics. Choosing to major in economics enables the student to explore the fundamentals of economic theory, as well as its rich arrays of applications and fields. Students choosing economics as a minor are exposed to the basic economic principles and applications.

A Unique Learning Experience

The undergraduate courses offered by the economics department are a well-balanced mix between theoretical and applied fields of economics. Courses include both introductory and intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, international trade, economic development, labor economics, money and banking, public finance and economics of Egypt. In addition, the special topic courses in theoretical and applied economics, often offered by faculty members, give interested students a vivid exposition of topical issues in economics.

AUC graduates who majored in economics are equipped with a strong background in economic theory and quantitative methods, and are in high demand in the job market. Our graduates are employed in a variety of institutions such as regional and international think-tanks, financial institutions, as well as research and technical departments in governmental agencies, multinational corporations and international organizations.
