Welcome From the Dean

What makes AUC unique in Egypt is our commitment to a liberal arts education – and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSS) has always been central to that mission. The courses, programs and majors offered by the faculty and departments of HUSS provide discipline-based expertise in a wide range of fields. Alongside this specialized focus, they also aim to help students from all backgrounds develop a breadth of knowledge and perspective; to nurture curiosity and open the wide vistas of the life of the mind; to encourage questioning and analysis - not just of conclusions, but of assumptions and biases as well; to foster thinking that is careful, critical and creative; and to facilitate and support engagement with our communities and the kind of informed ethical reflection that is the core of responsible citizenship in a rapidly changing world.

Whether in Community-Based Learning courses, interdisciplinary research projects, innovative curricular designs or other forms of outreach, our students are encouraged to question the separation of the classroom from ‘the world outside’ - to replace these walls with bridges, affording lively interaction and engagement. Together, HUSS students and faculty welcome opportunities to reach out to the communities we serve, and to know that our work is making a difference in support of positive, sustainable change.

HUSS comprises nine departments: Applied Linguistics, Arab and Islamic Civilizations, Arts, English and Comparative Literature, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology. While some programs are more popular with students than others, all add immeasurably to the identity of AUC as an academic community; together, they help map out the human condition and our shared human potential.

We offer 35 degrees and diplomas at the undergraduate and graduate level. Our world-class faculty not only excel as teachers, but are also dedicated scholars, many with international reputations. The important and innovative research of HUSS faculty provides the intellectual foundations that define the School and give focus to everything we do. It is our faculty, and the students they inspire, that have brought AUC recognition as the finest liberal arts university in the region.

AUC’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, as a unique advocate of fresh ideas and cross-disciplinary thinking, aims to give students the tools and experience that will enable them to actively engage with the many challenges that face Egypt and the world, with energy, creativity and passion.

Please join us in this vital work to explore and better the world we all share.
