Welcome From the Dean
Welcome to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
AUC has been providing a rich liberal arts education to students
from Egypt, the region and the world since it opened its doors almost 100
years ago in 1919. The HUSS mission embodies AUC’s commitment to an education that
equips our students with the tools to be independent, critical, open-minded
citizens of the world. HUSS students are engaged learners
who impact the communities of which they are a part. Our faculty members and academic
programs encourage students to explore the connections between their time in
the classroom and its significance for life outside of it. Whether it is
through Community-Based Learning courses, interdisciplinary research projects,
campus-wide capacity building programs or outreach to communities beyond the
campus walls, HUSS students are challenged to invest themselves in the pursuit
of social justice and positive, sustainable change.
HUSS comprises eight departments: Applied Linguistics, Arab and
Islamic Civilizations, Arts, English and Comparative Literature, History,
Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and
Egyptology. Together, they help us understand what it means to be human and
connect us with our global community. We offer 35 degrees and diplomas at the
undergraduate and graduate level. Our
faculty is truly world-class, teachers of the first order whose ground-breaking
research forms the academic foundation for all we do. It is to them, and the
students they inspire, that we owe our reputation as the finest liberal arts University in the region.
Today’s problems will not be solved by any one discipline,
body of knowledge, field of expertise or skill set. AUC’s School of Humanities
and Social Sciences prepares students to address the complex challenges that
lie ahead by thinking critically, thinking creatively and thinking big.
Please join us and share in the adventure.
