UNPAYWALL: Read research papers for free

Unpaywall is a plugin for Chrome and Firefox. It allows users to find free, but legal versions of research papers that publishers make available to paying subscribers (i.e., behind a paywall).

The Unpaywall plugin adds a green tab to the browser whenever a user looks at a citation on a publisher site. Click the green tab and skip the paywall. It's fast, free, and legal, powered by a database of millions of author-uploaded PDFs.

The plugin relies on the idea of Open Access. According to research conducted by the creators of Unpaywall, an increasing proportion of research articles are available in Open Access versions online. What is more, their research also shows that availability means greater visibility, which in turn results in increased citation counts for papers published in Open Access form.
