Using the Library
  • All new users must register at the entry desk the first time they visit the library. Bags and bulky items may not be brought into the research areas of the library, but must be left in the lockers near the entry desk. Library staff members and AUC security personnel reserve the right to search bags or other personal items upon entry or departure.

  • Food and drink are not permitted in the library.

  • Smoking is prohibited in the library building.

  • Users may bring laptop computers into the library for note taking. Electrical outlets may be found in the reading rooms.

  • Mobile telephones must be turned to silent ringing function or turned off while in the library. Speaking on mobile telephones is not permitted in research rooms or other locations within the library where other users might be disturbed.

  • Users are asked to minimize talking in areas where other users might be disturbed, and to speak in quiet tones.

  • Books are to be used within the library and do not circulate, with the exception of books and articles placed on reserve, which are available for overnight borrowing only. See Reserve Books and Articles for more information.

  • Use of open-stacks books is by self service. Users should not re-shelve books themselves, but instead should return books to the available re-shelving carts or leave books on the reading room tables.

  • Up to five items from the open-stacks collections may be placed in the Overnight Hold section behind the reference desk for retrieval up to three days later. Users must complete the appropriate form.
