SRC Training Activities
The Social Research Center offers a multitude of reputable and specialized training workshops focusing on research, analytical skills in social science as well as issues of human development and health promotion efforts and policies.

The SRC has been annually conducting two regional training workshops for more than a decade. The first focuses on research and analytical skills in social sciences, and the second on strategies for health improvements.

The three-month course on Social Science Research Methods addresses development concerns in the Arab region. It combines quantitative, qualitative and evaluation research. It is well recognized for its teaching approach, paying special attention to practical aspects and hands-on applications. This course has developed its own teaching materials.

The three-week course on health strategies targets health ministries and development actors, and provides critical engagement with recent international discourses and paradigms.

The SRC contributes to capacity building not only by conducting the above-mentioned training courses, but also by engaging student and graduate student research assistants, who get practical and substantive research training by working on research projects under the supervision of one or more of the SRC’s research faculty.


Research Methods for Guiding Policy and Evaluation
The SRC organizes on an annual basis a three-month training program on Research Methods for Guiding Policy and Evaluation, responsive to the needs of development activities in the Arab region, particularly in the fields of population and health. While the substantive focus is on population and health, the basic tools and concepts emphasized in this program cut across many policy areas and social science fields. Hence, certain components of the program are offered to a wider audience, including academics, government ministry personnel, NGO staff and program managers from International donor agencies working in development sectors.

Health Equity and Reproductive Health: 
Implications for Research, Policy and Actions

This workshop was initiated in response to the new reproductive health paradigm introduced in the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994. It responded to the need to increase awareness and understanding of professionals and institutions in the Arab region to the new reproductive health paradigm and its translation into research and actions. 

In 2011, the scope of the workshop was readjusted in response to the international concern for issues of health inequities. The new round was called Health Equity and Reproductive Health:  Implications for Research, Policy and Actions. The new workshop addressed issues of health inequities and social determinants of health with an application in reproductive health. The workshop aims to support researchers, policy planners and practitioners to adopt an equity lens particularly in the area of reproductive health. Over the last two rounds, 47 participants were trained in these new issues.

The workshop emphasizes a social justice frame and uses health equity as a marker for development and success of social public policies, as well as the governance commitment to social justice. This framing widens the relevance of this workshop to both social and public health researchers, program officers and policy makers and invites their contribution in this newly emerging field.

Throughout its 15 rounds, the workshop participants had diverse professional backgrounds, namely academics, senior administrators in reproductive health programs or projects, program officers, public health specialists, demographers, development specialists and other specialties. Representation of nongovernmental organizations working in the field of women’s health was significant. Participants from Arab countries offered a good representation of all the countries of the region.
